How to find the correct drivers for your RM computer if the 'Serial number search' does not find them
Published Date : 01 May 2006   Last Updated : 04 Oct 2024   Content Ref: TEC640536

Procedure

The best way to find the correct drivers for your computer is to use the Serial Number Search facility on the My Computer page of the Support website: www.rm.com/support/mycomputer.asp

This normally lists all the latest drivers and Knowledge Library articles relevant to your system.

If the drivers are not listed by the Serial Number Search, you can find the correct drivers as follows:

  1. Enter your computer's serial number in the Serial Number Search box and click enter.
  2. Click the 'View equipment detail of this system' link and you will see the RMEquip file for your computer. The driver module names appear in square brackets at the end of some lines (see examples below, circled in red).
  3. Use the Knowledge Library to search for the driver module name. If the driver name is preceded by a 0, then try another search without the leading 0.

In the example below, the mainboard driver name will be M5N. The graphics or video driver is called 0XTREME2. The 0 is sometimes used to indicate that the graphics function is part of the mainboard. If you search for 0XTREME2 or XTREME2 the correct driver will be listed. The driver may be listed for a different system, but if the module name is the same, you can also use it on your system.

Checks

Identical systems

Check that you have entered the serial number correctly. RM computer serial numbers always begin with two letters followed by eight numbers.

  • The first two letters are always either TO, MO or WO.
  • The next six numbers indicate a unique batch number.
  • The last two digits represent the number of that system (1-99) in the batch.

If two computers have identical serial numbers except for the last two numbers (e.g. WO43210001 and WO43210002), they will have identical hardware and software installed and thus require the same drivers.

More Information

RM have a unique module name for each driver. The module name can be preceded by a 0, which indicates that the driver is for a mainboard function (rather than for an add-in card).

As shipped, drivers can be found in the C:\RMDRV folder and also in the C:\RM\DRIVERS folders on RM computers.

Your computer may have an audio card fitted. In this case, the on-board audio function will be disabled. Similarly, your system may have an Ethernet or graphics card added and the on-board ethernet or graphics card functions disabled.

It cannot be assumed that because your mainboard chipset driver is the same as used by another mainboard, that your other drivers will be the same as the other mainboard also. Always use the module name from the RMEquip file to find each driver.

We strongly recommend that you always download the latest drivers from the RM website using the 'Serial number search' facility. This ensures that you have the most up-to-date set of drivers and that you see all the relevant knowledge articles for your system. Alternatively, you can use the RMRestor feature to restore the original factory image, provided you have not wiped the contents of the original hard disk.
