Summary
Contains instructions on how to use Microsoft Excel to generate passwords for importing into RM Easimaths.
Symptoms
Pupils' accounts can be created in RM Easimaths™ by importing a .csv file containing their surname, forename, date of birth, username and password. Microsoft ExcelŽ can be used to generate usernames and passwords for schools which do not have usernames and passwords for the pupils.
Cause
Usernames and passwords are not automatically generated as many schools now use single sign-on or prefer to select the usernames and passwords used by their pupils.
Requirements
You will need administrator access to the school's RM Easimaths site.
Procedure
How to set the same password for all pupils:
Open the .csv file in Microsoft Excel.
Add two new columns - Username and Password.
If you wish all the pupils to use the same password, type the required password into the Password cell for the first pupil in the file.
Click the cell into which you have just typed the password and then click the Copy icon - the cell will now have a flashing striped border.
Left-click the cell again and hold the left mouse button down while dragging the cursor to the last cell in that column.
Click the Paste icon - the same password will be pasted into the Password column for all the pupils in the file.
How to generate a username or password using Microsoft Excel
Please see this YouTube video that describes how to use Microsoft Excel to generate usernames and passwords that can then be used for RM Easimaths: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pmxcsvAEku0
Possible Issues
Please note that the function contained in the YouTube video does not make allowance for users having the same initials and surnames. So before saving your spreadsheet as a .csv file for importing into RM Easimaths, you should check it for duplicate usernames. Since the usernames should be unique, if you find two identical usernames, e.g. JSmith, you can add a numeral to one of them so that you end up with JSmith and JSmith1.
