Summary
Explains how to enable the sync of parent email addresses from RM Unify to Microsoft 365 so as to take advantage of the Teams Assignments weekly digest feature.
Symptoms
Microsoft Teams for Education can help keep parents and guardians in the loop regarding their child's work via the Assignments weekly guardian email digest. This is a great way to help drive parental engagement and to help build better and more supportive relationships between schools and students and their families.
One of the challenges of utilising this feature lies in both linking parent/guardians to the student accounts in Microsoft 365 and updating those student accounts with the correct parent/guardian email address. This has additional complexity because parents are not entitled to Microsoft 365 licences in the same way that staff and students are, so they do not exist in the Microsoft 365 tenant in the same way.
This is where your RM Unify connection, from your MIS onwards to Microsoft 365, simplifies the whole process. By creating parent accounts in RM Unify, and enabling the sync of their email addresses to Microsoft 365, you can quickly and easily achieve the pre-requisites that allow you to enable the weekly guardian email digest.
Guardian emails are sent each weekend to those parents or guardians who have RM Unify parent accounts. The email contains information about assignments from the previous week and for the upcoming week.
Requirements
Your RM Unify establishment must:
be federated to Microsoft 365
have MIS Sync enabled (either Create mode or Link mode)
have parent RM Unify accounts, created via the invite process
You must have access to an RM Unify super admin account and a Microsoft 365 Global Admin
Students must belong to at least one class in which e-mail is enabled (in assignment settings)
Procedure
Part 1 - RM Unify configuration
As per the Requirements, you will have an RM Unify establishment, federated to Microsoft 365, and with MIS Sync enabled - it is only via MIS Sync that parent accounts can be created in RM Unify. You may have RM Unify Group Sync enabled and syncing your MIS groups to create Edu Classes for use in Microsoft Teams, or you may manage this yourself outside of RM Unify.
Next steps:
As an RM Unify super admin sign in to the Management Console and navigate to the Parent Management page.
Click the Setup Guide button at the top-right side and scroll to STEP 5.
Tick the box labelled 'Enable sync of parent email addresses to Microsoft 365'.
Navigate to a Microsoft 365 tile in the App Library.
In the Support Info section of the tile 'Are users missing from Microsoft 365?', select the 'Click here' link.
Select the Resync Users button - this will sync the email addresses for all RM Unify Parent accounts to Microsoft 365.
Part 2 - Microsoft 365 configuration
As a Microsoft 365 global admin, sign in and navigate to Microsoft Teams admin center, Education, Parent and guardian settings
Select the 'Weekly guardian email digest' toggle to change it to On and select Save (Image 2).
Note: Staff can choose to opt-out of the digest by deselecting the setting inside their own personal class team: Assignment Settings, Parent/Guardian Emails.
Checks
Guardian emails are sent each weekend to parents or guardians. The email contains information about assignments from the previous week and for the upcoming week.
