Published Date : 02 May 2007   Last Updated : 23 Sep 2022   Content Ref: TEC862550

Symptoms

You are experiencing issues with Internet connectivity and wish to confirm which Internet Service Provider you connect through.

Procedure

To confirm who your Internet Service Provider is, you first need to confirm the Public IP address your connection originates from. To do this, you can use any one of a number of web sites that identify the source of your communication.

How to confirm your IP address
  1. Open Windows® Internet Explorer® and browse to an IP identification web site; here are some examples:
  2. Take a note of the IP address that is reported, it will be in the format xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx.
  3. Once you have identified your IP address, you need to confirm which ISP it belongs to.

How to confirm which ISP your IP address is allocated to
  1. Open Windows Internet Explorer and browse to:
  2. Enter the IP address you have obtained and click Search.

The Results page will contain a substantial amount of information, it will probably contain some identification data for your organisation such as your address, telephone number etc. Scroll to the bottom of the page and you should find a block of information starting route which will contain an entry descr which will identify your ISP. Here is an example entry:

  • route:           217.176.0.0/13
  • descr:           Research Machines Plc
  • descr:           Internet for Learning
  • origin:           AS5503
  • mnt-by:         AS5503-MNT
  • source:          RIPE # Filtered

Possible Issues

Network Address Translation

If when you attempt to identify your IP address using one of the many IP identification sites on the Internet, it reports an IP address in one of the following ranges:

  • 10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255
  • 172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255
  • 192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255

The site has identified your communication as originating from a Private IP address and this information will not assist in identifying your ISP, therefore please try a different IP identification Web site until you obtain an IP address outside of these ranges.
