Summary
Explains why Chromebook users are continually returned to the Chromebook sign in page after entering sign in credentials.
Symptoms
When users sign in to a Chromebook they are returned to the Chromebook sign in page again. The sequence of events is:
On the Chromebook sign in page, the user enters their email address and password.
A 'Please wait' screen, followed by a black screen temporarily appears.
The user is returned to the Chromebook sign in page again.
Cause
This can occur in the following circumstances:
Google Workspace has been configured to push down Wi-Fi network settings to managed/enroled Chromebooks, but the Chromebook is unable to access the configured Wi-Fi network. For example, the Wi-Fi settings relate to the wireless network at school, but the Chromebook is being used from the user's home.
If only one Chromebook is affected, there is a local issue on the Chromebook.
Please see the relevant section below.
Procedure
Check Wi-Fi network settings
To resolve this issue, follow the steps given below (referring to the screenshot):
Sign in to your Google Admin console as an administrator user.
Navigate to Devices, Networks.
Select the organisational unit for your Chromebook. This may be the parent organisational unit or child organisational unit.
Under Wi-Fi, review the Wi-Fi network settings to ensure they are appropriate for the Chromebook.
Under 'General settings (Chromebook only)', click 'Restrict Wi-Fi networks'.
If 'Restrict Wi-Fi networks' is enabled (and seems the likely cause of the sign in issue being experienced), consider if this is appropriate for the Chromebook.
Review the settings under 'Auto-connect' and 'Allowed network interfaces' to also ensure they are appropriate for the Chromebook.
To change one or more settings, check where the setting is being inherited from and decide whether to change it at the parent or child organisational unit.
Local issue on the Chromebook
This can occur for a number of reasons and the simplest way to recover is to wipe and re-enrol the Chromebook. Please see Google support for instructions on how to wipe and re-enrol your Chromebook and confirm with your Google administrator before proceeding.
More Information
For more information about Chromebook network settings, please refer to the following Google Help page:
'Restrict networks and network interfaces
For administrators who manage Chrome devices for a business or school.
As an admin, you can use the Google Admin console to configure device policies to restrict network connectivity. For example, you can restrict devices enroled in an organizational unit to connect only to Ethernet. Or, you can prevent employees from connecting to a Wi-Fi hotspot running off their personal phones.'
