How to enable a Remote Desktop Connection

Symptoms

You need to connect remotely to a terminal server, but cannot find the Remote Desktop Connection feature in the Start menu.


Cause

Terminal Services have not been installed.

How to enable remote desktop on Windows Server

Note: By default, Remote Desktop for Administration on Windows Server are disabled.

  1. Log on as an administrative user.
  2. From the Start menu, select Settings, Control Panel, System.
  3. Click the Remote tab, tick the 'Allow users to connect remotely to your computer' box.
  4. Click OK.

Allowing server to connect to a computer
  1. From the server that you wish to connect from, go to the Start menu, select Run and type regedit.
  2. If you are on Windows Server, in the Registry Editor, from the File menu, select Connect Network Registry.


  3. Select Computer for Object Types and Entire Directory for Locations. In the 'Enter the object name to select' box, type the computer name you want to connect to or the IP address of the remote computer. Click Check Names and then click OK.


  4. Once the computer has been found, it will show up on the registry.


  5. Underneath the computer name, browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server, right-click fDenyTSConnections and then select Modify. 


  6. In the Edit DWORD Value window, change the Value data from 1 to 0, and then click OK.


  7. Close the Registry Editor. 

System administrators will now be able to connect to this workstation using Terminal Services across the network.



Checks

The icon for Remote Desktop Connection will appear when you click Start, All Programs, Accessories, Communications.
