How to set up and receive Smoothwall alerts to your email address hosted in Microsoft 365

Requirements

  • Create an email account for Smoothwall which can be used as the sender's email address for the Smoothwall alert.
  • Set up SMTP email relay. To do this follow the steps below:
    1. Log on to the Smoothwall server.
    2. Click the SYSTEM tab.
    3. On the left-hand side, click Modules.
    4. On the right-hand side, under the 'Installed modules' section, click Anti-Spam. The Email module installs.
    5. Once the install is complete, a prompt appears asking permission to reboot the server, click Yes. Once the Email module is installed, you will find a new EMAIL tab in the Smoothwall console.
    6. Click the EMAIL tab.
    7. On the left-hand side, click Relay, tick the 'Enable mail relay:' box.
      Note: Make sure Mail Exchange records are present in DNS.

Procedure

To create alerts in the Smoothwall console, follow the steps below:

  1. Click the REPORTS tab.
  2. On the left-hand side, click Settings, Groups.
  3. From the 'Group name' drop-down menu, select Alert.
  4. Click Select.
  5. Enter the name and email address to which the alert is to be sent on a daily basis.
  6. Tick the Enable HTML Email and Enabled boxes.
  7. Click Add and then Save.

  1. Click the REPORTS tab.
  2. On the left-hand side, click Settings, 'Output settings'.
  3. Under the SMTP (Email) Output System section, enter the details as mentioned below:
    • In the 'SMTP server' field, type 127.0.0.1.
    • In the 'Sender's email address' field, enter <username>@reports.local (e.g: smoothwall@reports.local).
    • In the Username field, type the sender's email address (Microsoft® 365 account created for Smoothwall as mentioned in the Requirements section above).
    • In the Password field, type the password of the sender's email account you created previously.
  4. Click Save.
  5. To generate a test alert, click the 'Generate test alert' button.

Real time report checks can be obtained soon after sending the test alerts by following the steps below:

  1. Click the REPORTS tab.
  2. On the left-hand side, click Logs, Email.

More Information

To send the report to any other email address other than the scheduled email address, follow the steps below:

  1. Click the REPORTS tab.
  2. On the left-hand side, click Settings, 'Output settings'.
  3. In the 'Send test to' field, type the email address and click the 'Send test' button.
