My domain fails verification in Microsoft 365
Published Date : 12 Jun 2013   Last Updated : 25 Jul 2024   Content Ref: TEC3312075

Symptoms

You are adding your own domain to Microsoft® 365™ and your DNS administrator has confirmed the provisional TXT or MX records have been created. You find, however, that Microsoft fails to verify the domain even though the required 72 hours have passed.

Cause

The most common reason for this is a typographical error in the TXT or MX record that Microsoft asked you to create. Although you may have asked a third party provider to create these records for you, you can still check their values using one of many free DNS tools e.g., DNSWatch.

Requirements

Using DNSWatch
  1. Browse to: DNSWatch.
  2. In the 'DNS Lookup/IP lookup' section, type your domain name in the 'Hostname or IP' box e.g. mydomain.co.uk.
  3. In the Type drop-down menu, select MX or TXT depending on which record was set up.
  4. Click Resolve.
  5. In the resulting window, confirm the value under the Answer column matches the DNS settings provided by Microsoft.
  6. If the setting does not match then please ask your DNS provider to make the required amendment.
