Configuring your FTP client for the RM Linux cPanel web hosting solution
Published Date : 13 Oct 2011   Last Updated : 04 Oct 2024   Content Ref: TEC2197851

Cause

Linux cPanel web hosting platform

We are migrating our Linux web hosting websites to a brand new web hosting platform on a resilient virtual hardware. As part of this move, and as a security measure, all the websites will receive a new username and password.

Folder structure change

On the previous web hosting solution, your website root directory/folder was the same as the root directory/folder you are connected to via File Transfer Protocol (FTP).

Based on customer requests to enable you to access your website's log files, we have changed the folder structure on the new web hosting platform. This change will also allow you to have private areas on your website that are not accessible via the Internet.

This means that your website root is in the 'www' folder under your FTP root:

Procedure

There are a number of ways to upload your website to the Internet, including:

  • Using an FTP client, like FileZilla
  • Using a website developer program, like AdobeŽ DreamweaverŽ
  • Using a Content Management System, like Moodle
  • Using cPanel's built in File Manager

If you are using a program to upload your website (first three options in the above list), you need to add some settings to your FTP upload program.

Configuring your FTP client

The steps below are for FileZilla, but all FTP clients are similar. If in doubt, check your program's help files or the support website.

  Welcome email

  1. Open your FTP client.
  2. Click File, Site Manager.
  3. Under the General tab, fill the following fields:
    • Host: Type the name of the FTP server provided in your welcome email, e.g. custweb01.vws.ifl.net.
    • Username: Type your FTP username.
    • Password: Type your FTP password.
FTP settings.

  1. Select the Advanced tab.
  2. In the 'Default remote directory' field, type /www.
  3. Click OK.

Note: If you do not add '/www' to the Default remote directory, your updated pages will be uploaded to the wrong directory, which means that you will not be able to see the changes you have made, when checking your updates on the Internet.

Configuring Adobe Dreamweaver

Follow the instructions in the Dreamweaver help files or the support website to add the following information:

  • FTP server: The name of the FTP server provided in your welcome email, e.g. custweb01.vws.ifl.net
  • Username: Type your FTP username.
  • Password: Type your FTP password.

In the 'Host directory' field, type www, as shown in the image below:

Configuring other website development programs

Each program is different. Please check your program's help files or the support website for information on how to configure FTP. The settings that need to be added are:

  • FTP server: the name of the FTP server provided in your welcome email, e.g. custweb01.vws.ifl.net
  • Username: Type your FTP username.
  • Password: Type your FTP password.
  • Default remote directory: www

Configuring your Content Management System

If you use a Content Management System (e.g. Joomla, Drupal, Moodle or Wordpress), then it's unlikely that you will use FTP to upload changes to your website. However, you should retain the FTP details in your welcome email in case you have to make major changes to your website, such as uploading a new Content Management System.

If your website uses a Content Management System, it is highly likely that your website has a database.

Configuring cPanel's File Manager
cPanel's File Manager is an easy to use alternative to FTP for uploading content to your website. You need to keep the username, password and server hostname from the welcome email you received, in order to use cPanel in the future.

What do I do if I experience issues while configuring the FTP client?
