Summary
If a faulty Autoloader has to be swapped out, disk-to-disk-to-tape will not continue working as previously because the Autoloader will be recognised as being different by Symantec Backup Exec. Some simple reconfiguration is required as described herein.
Symptoms
After an Autoloader or Tape Library has been swapped out on an RM D2D2T (disk-to-disk-to-tape) system, duplicate backups may fail.
Cause
The backup jobs are trying to use an Autoloader that is no longer present. Symantec Backup Exec™ has to be made aware that the Autoloader has been changed, and the jobs need to be directed towards the new one.
Requirements
This is a generic document and does not offer exact instructions for all variations of hardware that may be seen. A working knowledge of Symantec Backup Exec is assumed.
Procedure
To reconfigure the jobs to be directed to the new Autoloader:
Open Backup Exec and select the Devices tab.
Select the old Autoloader, right-click and choose Delete (the name should be in red letters as Backup Exec knows it is no longer present).
Ensure the new Autoloader is connected and switched on - restart the Diskbox.
Open Device Manager and check that the new tape device is recognised and does not have a yellow exclamation mark. If it is not present or has an exclamation mark, then browse to C:\Program Files\Symantec\BackupExec and run "tapeinst.exe". Follow the on-screen prompts and the new device drivers for the tape drive will be loaded. When finished go back to the Device Manager and re-scan. The tape device should now be loaded correctly.
The new Autoloader and drive should be detected automatically and be displayed on the Devices tab of Backup Exec as Sony3 and Sony4, or perhaps Tandberg1 and Tandberg2. No drivers need to be loaded, as the drivers are already on the Diskbox and removing the old Autoloader from Backup Exec will not cause the drivers to be removed.
On the Devices tab, rename the Autoloader and the drive to be something meaningful.
Select the Job Setup tab and double-click the Policy to edit it.
Open the Policy and for each Duplicate (Backup to tape) template in turn, do the following:
Open the Destination, Device and Media page.
Change the Device to be the name just given to the Autoloader (not the name given to the drive).
Click OK to save it, move on to next duplicate template.
Close and save the Policy.
On the Job Setup tab, right-click the Policy name and select 'Delete jobs created from Policy'.
Select all selection lists and click OK.
Right-click the Policy name and select 'Create jobs from Policy'.
Tick all relevant selection lists (this might not be all of them, if some were used by a different policy).
Click OK and then click OK again.
Jobs should now have been recreated to backup to the new unit.
