How to determine what memory modules (DIMMs) you have present in a computer

  • You may wish to upgrade the memory in your system but are unsure what is already fitted.
  • You have fitted extra memory but Microsoft® Windows® is not registering the extra memory.
  • You wish to determine the make, model and capacity of DIMMs fitted to your system.


Use RM_MemScan

RM_MemScan.exe is a Windows utility developed by RM that will interrogate the DIMMs that are fitted to a system. It works under Windows XP or later Windows operating systems and on all current RM hardware PCs and notebooks.

RM_MemScan can be downloaded from the Other Useful Articles section below.

The utility is simply copied to your C: drive when downloaded and the files can be re-copied and used on any Windows system and can be run from a USB flash drive or network folder.

Use RMSysInfo

RMSysInfo.hta can be downloaded from the link at the bottom of this article.

Note: If you cannot see the download link, please log in to rm.com.

Under Windows XP it will display only limited information about the memory present in your system, an example is shown below:

Total Memory slots=4
Empty Memory slots=0
Used Memory slots=4
Total Memory=1792MB

Under Windows Vista it may also list the part number and serial number of each DIMM.

The report can be directly emailed to anyone at RM using the email button (Internet access required).

Note: Information is obtained from the BIOS and not directly from the DIMMS and so may not be 100% accurate.

Third-Party utilities

RM recommends the free third-party utility CPU-Z from http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php.

  • Download and install the files from the link above (or if preferred, download the ZIP file and extract the contents to a USB flash memory drive for use on any system).
  • Run CPU-Z.exe.
  • Click on the SPD tab.
  • You should see a drop-down list and Slot #1 listed. By selecting the DIMM slot in the drop-down list, you can select each DIMM in turn and determine its make, type, model number, size, serial number and other details.
  • To obtain this information as a file, click on the About tab and then click on the HTML Dump button to save as an html file. A typical example is shown below:

      If sending information to RM, please type cpuz.exe -txt=cpu.txt from a Windows command prompt window and email the resulting file cpu.txt to RM support if you have any memory related queries.

      Note: Information is read from each small memory chip (SPD eerom) located on each DIMM. The information in each memory chip is usually correct if it is from a reputable manufacturer.
